NEW WAX MODEL OF RACING GREYHOUND AT TUSSAUDS

Press release-BGRB web site reads

1st AUGUST 2007

FIRST CANINE SPORTS PERSONALITY FOR MADAME TUSSAUDS AS WESTMEAD HAWK HAILED BEST OF BRITISH

Westmead Hawk, the wonder dog of modern greyhound racing, is set to break another record by becoming the first animal athlete to make it into Madame Tussauds London.

The four-legged legend will be depicted in the attraction’s recently opened Sports Zone and will personally unveil his wax likeness to launch a “Best of British” season at the top attraction in October.
“We are delighted to welcome The Hawk to Madame Tussauds London” said Head of Marketing Drew Potton. “Greyhound racing is a uniquely British and hugely popular sport, thrilling millions of fans every year. He is the perfect star to open our Best of British season where we will be celebrating all of the Great Britons in the attraction, with themed entertainment and a distinctly London twist. We’re sure our first four legged sports personality will be as big a hit here as he has been on the tracks during his illustrious career.”

The Hawk has already undertaken a sitting for the studios team where hundreds of measurements have been taken of every part of his body and careful colour matches made for his eyes and coat.

Westmead Hawk’s figure is scheduled to be unveiled in mid-October and Best of British at Madame Tussauds will run over the October half term period.

David Lipsey, BGRB Chairman said:

“I am absolutely delighted that a model of The Hawk is to feature at Madame Tussauds London. Greyhound racing is an iconic part of British culture and for one of its greats to be recognised alongside many other sporting superstars is fantastic news. Thousands possibly even millions of visitors from across Britain and abroad will be introduced to the sport for the first time via the wax figure and I can’t wait to see it myself in October.”

TAKE ACTION:

We recieved this from a supporter:

"I have spoken today at length with Madame Tussauds regarding the new model to be unveiled October of greyhound Westmead Hawk (now retired through injury and used for breeding)."

Ben Lovett is PR Manager tel. 0207 487 0264 and Dominic Wong is Consumer Insight & Research Manager – tel. 0207 4870309 email dominic.wong@madame-tussauds.com

The above have said no details have yet being finalised on the form this display will take and Dominic WELCOMES FEEDBACK FROM EVERYONE.

I would guess, however, the intention for the display is to show Westmead Hawk standing proud or in full flight with supporting information covering only the animal’s achievements.

A display taking this form will serve only to glorify greyhound racing and IS A TOTAL MIS-REPRESENTATION OF THE BUSINESS OF RACING GREYHOUNDS.

Perhaps they should include as part of the display the recent and excellent GA slide show or at least include supporting text informing the public about the shameful side of racing:

The fact the NGRC security coordinator (Noel Thompson) refers to greyhounds as ‘units’.

The fact the NGRC refuse to make public data relating to the fate of greyhounds because they fear public reaction.

The fact the RCPA refuse to release data concerning greyhound injuries because they fear public reaction.

The fact every year many greyhounds suffer horrific injuries on the track and are destroyed immediately by the vet on duty.

The fact many greyhounds are treated in a brutal way and retire from racing physically and/or mentally scared.

The fact commonly greyhounds are abandoned or given to anyone with out neutering or home check.

The fact numbers bred each year far exceed potential homes available for greyhounds.

Please keep all emails polite. You may like to refer them to the GA website and in particular to http://www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/facts7.html
where many cases of cruelty to racing greyhounds are documented.
