Greyhound Action E-mail Newsletter #5 Autumn 2004

Greyhound Awareness Week | Greyhound Derby Day of Action | International Greyhound Memorial Weekend | Saturday July 24th | Greyhound Rememberance Day

Big success for GA events - 2004 best year ever!

We are very pleased to announce that 2004 has been the best year for Greyhound Action events since our formation in 1997.

Greyhound Awareness Week, Greyhound Derby Day of Action and International Greyhound Memorial Weekend all went extremely well, with increased participation and better media coverage than ever before.

Very many thanks to all of you who took part in these events - and also to those who have organised and helped with Greyhound Action stalls, demos etc. at other times.

Without your help and support, our continuing success in advancing the cause of greyhound protection could never be achieved.

Many thanks also to those who sent us photos of events they took part in. It was great to receive so many. We’ve included a selection in this newsletter.

Our apologies if yours isn't here

Greyhound Awareness Week
May 22nd - 29th

Every year, Greyhound Awareness Week gives an opportunity for all those concerned about the plight of greyhounds to educate the public about the mass slaughter of dogs caused by the greyhound racing industry.

With a large enough boycott by ordinary people, the industry can be brought to its knees and the suffering and untimely death of thousands of greyhounds prevented.
This year’s Greyhound Awareness Week was the most successful ever, with events taking place all over the country and media interest much greater than in previous years, including features on national radio and TV.

Greyhound Derby Day of Action - Saturday, June 5th

On the day of the William Hill Greyhound Derby Final a large number of bets are placed on the dogs.
A percentage of the money wagered goes to support greyhound racing.

Greyhound Action supporters picketted betting shops throughout the country in order to educate punters about the death and suffering of dogs at the hands of the greyhound racing industry and to persuade them (if they must gamble) to bet instead on activities (e.g. football and cricket) which do not involve animals.

International Greyhound Memorial Weekend - July 24th - 25th

International Greyhound Memorial Weekend (IGMW) is held every year in many different countries in memory of the millions of dogs that have suffered and died at the hands of the greyhound racing industry worldwide.

This year, dozens of events took place to mark IGMW, mainly in the USA and the UK, but also in Belgium, Canada, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Spain and Sweden.

In the British Isles July 24th was designated as Greyhound Saturday and July 25th as Greyhound Remembrance Day.

Greyhound Remembrance Day - July 25th

Hundreds of greyhound protection campaigners, many accompanied by their rescued greyhounds, held remembrance ceremonies outside dog tracks throughout Britain as part of this year’s Greyhound Remembrance Day. (Greyhound racing in the UK began on July 24th, 1926 at Belle Vue, Manchester and Greyhound Remembrance Day is held on the nearest Sunday to this date every year).

The campaigners, holding banners and placards, laid flowers and wreaths outside the gates of the stadiums and held a minute's silence in memory of the millions of greyhounds that have suffered and died at the hands of the dog racing industry in Britain and throughout the world.

Greyhound remembrance ceremonies were held at places as far apart as Glasgow, Manchester, Nottingham, Great Yarmouth, Hove and Exeter and, in the West Midlands, all four of the region's dog tracks were covered.
Dozens of people attended the ceremonies, together with their rescued greyhounds, and hundreds flocked to a huge event in Bristol, in a park next to where the city’s greyhound track used to be.
