Please take action now by writing yet again to Amanda Bringans at 'Macmillan Care', this woman seems to be blinded by the facts about the horrific plight of the racing greyhound. is her response to SAFE and others, regarding Macmillan charity
fundraising nights at Greyhound tracks - the most recent being
held to-night - Saturday 11 July at Wimbledon. Dear Thank you for your email dated 9th July regarding the Greyhound Fundraising event to be held by Dave Wood at the Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium. I respect your personal views on greyhound racing and please be assured that your comments will be taken into consideration when planning future fundraising events. I have spoken with Alistair McLean, CEO at the Fundraising Standards Boards (FRSB),which monitor standards in Fundraising in the UK. As a result of my conversation with the FRSB, we remain satisfied that Greyhound racing is a legal sport, and believe the tracks where the events in support of Macmillan are held are well established venues with stringent animal welfare guidelines and Retired greyhound schemes. Our ethics committee at Macmillan has also considered the issue of greyhound racing and has made the decision to accept donations from this activity. As you understand these events are organised by local volunteers and we are bound by law to accept money generated by legal activities unless in direct contravention of charitable objectives (e.g. tobacco companies). The support we receive from such volunteers is absolutely vital in order for us to continue developing services to meet the needs of people affected by cancer. This is of paramount importance with two million people now living with cancer, and our increasing range of services (including Macmillan nurses, doctors, health and social care professionals, cancer information, and financial assistance) being funded entirely through the generosity of our supporters.. Some of you will be aware of the recent death of a special animal protection
person who requested that donations in her memory were made to either
Hillside Animal Sanctuary or Macmillan Cancer Care.
Sadly, our friend who died was not aware that Macmillan raises funds
by holding nights out at greyhound racing, and had she have been aware
of this, she would have been horrified that Macmillan condones, and
raises money from off the backs of greyhounds.
One of her close friends phoned Macmillan Head Office in London to raise
this issue with them, and spoke to a very sympathetic person, who said
that she fully agreed that Macmillan should not be fund raising by having
nights out at greyhound tracks. She was very aware of the holocaust
of suffering and death, and said that she had received a lot of correspondence
and contact from people throughout the UK raising the same moral issue.
She was also aware that Macmillan could be losing public support, financial
aid, and legacies due to their current policy.
She further went on to say that she would be emailing Macmillan Fund
Raising department, and suggested that people contact them, rather than
Head Office, as they are the department who need to reconsider their
decision, by switching to ethical and compassionate means of fund raising.
