London Greyhound Action
Events Newsletter: Spring/Summer 2004

Dear London Greyhound Action Supporter,

As you probably know, LGA are a small group, who are trying to organise demos & events that target the London/Greater London racing tracks.

We held a candlelit vigil outside Walthamstow stadium, on December 10th 2003, as part of the International Day of Animal Rights, and since then we have been fairly quiet.

However…

We have put together this events newsletter/e-mail, to inform you of the forthcoming events that LGA are participating in this summer, & to ask you for your help at them.

We want our voices to be heard at the London and Greater London tracks over the next few months, and we need as many people as we can to help us do this.

So, if you can help at any of the events listed below; then please get in touch with Steph, on 07984 836 368, & we can chat further. If you are coming along, it would be great to get confirmation of numbers; we can be e-mailed at: londongreyhoundaction@yahoo.co.uk

Greyhound Awareness Week: Sat 22nd-Sat 29th May 2004

Throughout this week, we want to hold demos at as many of the London/Greater London tracks as we can. We hope there will be a demo at the Wimbledon track on Saturday 22nd May, from 6-8pm. And a demo at the Walthamstow track on Saturday 29th May, from 6-8pm. At both of these demos, we plan to have banners & posters to attract the passing public, & most importantly, we plan to hand out as much literature as possible, to punters and passers-by.

If you cannot make either of these, you can always leaflet outside your nearest track- Call Steph for more info.or leaflets, posters etc.

Kingston-Upon-Thames Green Fair: Bank Holiday Monday 31st May

LGA have reserved a stall at this great family day out in Kingston. The stall will be up & running from 11am-8pm, so if you could come along and help run the stall for an hour or so that would be great.

We’ll be handing out leaflets, stickers & literature- as well as selling the new Greyhound Action T.Shirts, mugs & badges. The fair is a really enjoyable day out, with lots of ethically minded people about (a big     change to handing out leaflets outside Walthamstow stadium!).

Greyhound Derby Day of Action: Saturday June 5th

On the William Hill Greyhound Derby Final a large number of bets are placed on the dogs.

Greyhound Action supporters all over the country will be picketing betting shops (William Hill in particular) in order to educate punters about the death and suffering of dogs at the hands of the industry, & to persuade people, that if they have to gamble; to bet on activities that don’t involve animals.

LGA plays a big part in this day of action, as the derby is held at the Wimbledon track. Therefore we will be staging a demo outside the track that day.

Numbers are really important on this day; so PLEASE come along, with friends, bringing placards, banners etc.

London Vegan Festival: Sunday July 4th 10am-7pm Kensington Town Hall

For the second year running, LGA will hold a stall at this great festival. This is a fantastic day out, and everyone is very supportive of our campaign. Plus you can do lots of ethical shopping, sign lots of petitions & eat lots of scrummy food- all under one roof!

So, if you can spare some time, come along.

Greyhound Remembrance Day: Sunday July 25th

Greyhound racing in the UK began on July 24th, 1926 at Belle Vue, Manchester. On the nearest Sunday to this date every year, Greyhound Action stage an event called Greyhound Remembrance Day, in memory of the hundreds of thousands of dogs that have been abused & killed by the greyhound racing industry since that day.

The event is a peaceful & emotional one;, involving laying flowers outside stadiums. It is also a good event to bring rescued greyhounds to, providing a good media opportunity.

Last year, 13 tracks were covered on Greyhound Remembrance Day!

We really need to recruit more supporters of LGA, so please pass this e-mail/ letter on to anyone who you think would be interested.

Thanks for your support.
