Greyhound stadium may be built in Liverpool Please help Red Alert Fazakerley stop this track Press Releases: 9/11/2002 ALERT OVER PROPOSED GREYHOUND TRACK IN FAZAKERLEY A group comprising of local residents, environmentalists and greyhound rescue workers have combined to form "RED ALERT FAZAKERLEY" to oppose the proposals to build a greyhound racing stadium in Fazakerley. A greyhound racing stadium would bring with it a whole host of anti-social problems and the dog racing world itself is riddled with cruelty and corruption - but, to date, Council officials have only seen the pound signs of this £2 billion industry. Dog racing at other stadia is driven by gambling and fuelled by drinking. Council Leader, Mike Storey, has openly welcomed the proposals despite the fact that they clearly run contrary to the Councils own planning strategy, as outlined in the Unitary Development Plan. It is in a residential area - the planning dept have already received hundreds of objections from those residents fearful of the noise, nuisance, traffic disruption and drink related anti-social behaviour. The proposed site is Council owned and is designated as "open space", which is protected in the U.D.P from inappropriate development. It is adjacent to Fazakerley Ecology Park which is home to a unique urban population of red squirrels, for which it has achieved national recognition. It has special protection in the U.D.P. which specifically relates to any development adjacent to it. The construction and running of such a large stadium next to this already fragile wildlife haven would sound the death knell for Fazakerley's red squirrels. The Greyhound Racing Association (GRA) is behind the proposals. They stand to gain - who would be the losers? The people of Fazakerley and Liverpool, the red squirrels and, of course, the dogs who will be killed or abandoned once they become surplus to requirements. The GRA obviously think they are on to a winner as they've already bought up some industrial units, adjacent to the site, for access purposes. We will do all we can to stop Fazakerley going "to the dogs". This area of North Liverpool needs regeneration, not degeneration. Our first move is to produce and distribute 10,000 of our own leaflets. Watch this space!
