White-black
girl - born in - Lisroe, Capagh, Co. Waterford, Ireland - 1995
June 2nd,
by < New Level > out of < Benro Beauty > she's from
a registered litter of 3 dogs & 7 bitches.
Earmark: RM - IEM
1996 registered as < Finisk River > on the I-GSB under the
identity number 15872
and handed over to a family member of her breeder.
She was then exported to Italy about 1997/98, had worked hard
on the Naples track under poor conditions
until it closed in June 1999 due to bankruptcy.
Nearly one hundred of the greyhounds there were sold before to
Sicily abused and made to hunt for boar.
Hundreds of helpless greyhounds were left behind by the proprietor.
Their horrible situation and distress were published on Italian
TV.
Thanks to some Italian activists who intervened to stop the cruel
and captivity of the greyhounds, the first ten left in the second
half of September to Italian rescuers. The next twenty travelled
to the UK and so on.
The dogs who could be rescued were in poor, mostly terrible psychical
and physical conditions and were
adopted in Italy, England, France, Germany, Swiss etc., ....
Daisy travelled via Germany to France where two families were
found, but each brought her back.
It seems they hadn't been sensitive enough for a traumatized dog.
As luck would have it Daisy found the most wonderful family, the
Hauper-Kiefer's
who adopted Daisy at the end of 1999 and she lived to see some
happy years with them in Germany.
Daisy wasn't naughty; she was a very friendly, lovely, affectionate
and gentle girl.
She'd more contacts to all sorts of people and behaved just like
a normal dog.
She was affectionately known as the "receptionist" of
her family's business and very loved by all who knew her.
Daisy died four days after an operation due to a sarcoma in the
lymph gland on
January 28th, 2005 in the arms of her dad Erwin.
To this day over two years on, Daisy is still remembered with
much affection,
she is sadly missed by all who knew her.
God Bless our beautiful lovely Daisy who suffered so much in her
early years but found happiness in the end.
Big thanks to all Animal Protectors especially from Italy,
but also from other countries who helped on any kind of rescue
to them !
PLEASE let's never forget all the poor and defenceless Greyhounds
of the Naples track
and all of her littermates and half siblings of whom we know nothing
of their fate.
What's happened to all of her maternal and paternal siblings who
were exported to the UK, USA, Pakistan and further European countries
after racing ?
And what's happened to all of them who've to live to see what
it means to become an unwanted greyhound in Ireland ?

comment: Daisy's story clearly shows how a greyhound is considered
nothing more than a commodity to sell and trade on for profit
irrespective of it's own welfare. She started in Ireland, then
presumably because she wasn't fast enough anymore (or never had
been) she was exported to Italy ... but it could have just as
easily been Spain or even further afield to Pakistan. This is
just not acceptable, animals are sentient creatures, who feel
love, fear, pain and distress and should be treated with respect.
In the end Daisy was lucky because she was rescued ... but most
aren't.
